Futures & Aspirations (Careers) @ Shavington Academy
Here at Shavington Academy we are fully committed to ensuring that we prepare our pupils for their futures by taking their aspirations seriously, providing first-class independent careers guidance, and giving them regular opportunities to experience meaningful interactions with employers and post-16 providers. Below is a summary of our core offer.
- Futures Fair attended by all year groups.
- Our SPARK (PSHE) curriculum (one hour per week for every year group) includes a ‘Living in the Wider World’ strand, culminating in Year 11 where we prepare all pupils to apply for appropriate post-16 provision.
- Our PDCE weeks are used as a vehicle for giving pupils the opportunity to apply employability skills.
- We regularly create opportunities for our pupils to work with employers and post-16 providers to learn about particular industries and/or skills, e.g. Aureos, Brine Leas Sixth Form, British Aerospace, CCSW, Crewe UTC, Sandbach Sixth Form, The Army, The Big Bang Fair, The Police, Youth Parliament, etc.
- At Key Stage 4, assemblies are delivered by representatives from local colleges and sixth forms.
- In Year 10, all pupils are involved in our interview conference, complete 5 days of work experience, and attend a full taster day at CCSW to experience post-16 learning.
- All Year 11 pupils have at least one meeting with an independent Career Adviser.
- There are additional trips and visits organised for pupils who might need extra support in this area.
Vision Statement 2025 - 2028
Shavington Academy is committed to developing a whole-school Future Ready approach that prepares every pupil for a successful and fulfilling future.
The Academy recognises that modern careers are no longer linear and that young people require far more than qualifications alone. Pupils need:
- transferable skills,
- confidence,
- adaptability,
- aspiration,
- meaningful experiences,
- and informed guidance about the pathways available to them.
Our aim is not simply to prepare pupils for “a career”, but to prepare them for an evolving future.
The Future Ready strategy will ensure pupils leave the Academy as confident, informed and employable young people who understand their strengths, recognise opportunities and are prepared to make ambitious decisions about their next steps.
Strategic Context & Strategic Plan
Shavington Academy has historically developed a strong reputation for careers provision and has previously been recognised as a leading school in this area through Careers Mark accreditation and positive external feedback.
The school is now entering a new phase of development:
- preparing for Careers Mark reaccreditation,
- responding to the evolving Gatsby Benchmarks,
- strengthening curriculum integration,
- and building a broader Future Ready model centred around skills, aspiration and employability.
This strategy reflects the Academy’s ambition to evolve careers education from a standalone programme into a fully integrated whole-school approach.
